Food, meat shipments banned from entering Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh

Undersecretary Al-Shuaib’s intervene sought

KUWAIT CITY, April 9: The gas cylinder branch of Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh Cooperative Society has been closed because the relevant teams were prevented from entering the area. Also, shipments of meat and chicken were banned from entering, reports Al-Anba daily.

According to informed sources, orders were issued to close the central market from morning without the concerned director consulting the cooperative society, because closing the central market is only done through an order by minister of interior. As per the last paragraph of the isolation decision, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior and State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Anas Al-Saleh is responsible for preparing the appropriate controls and mechanisms in this regard. However, these mechanisms and controls were supposed to be implemented before the isolation.

The sources therefore urged Undersecretary Abdulaziz Al-Shuaib to intervene and send a letter about what happened to the concerned authorities in this regard.

Meanwhile, Director of Jleeb AlShuyoukh Cooperative Society Ali Hassan appealed to allow food shipments to enter the area amid fears of destruction of strategic stockpile if the food and catering items are not allowed to enter.

Report

He denied the report circulating about the central market facing a significant shortage of commodities and food items, stressing that the market currently has sufficient strategic stock that will last for a long time.

According to a letter submitted to the Undersecretary of Ministry of Social Affairs by Ali Hassan, the effects of total isolation in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh area for a period of two weeks has resulted in the cooperative society’s inability to play its role and work with all its energy to provide for the needs of Kuwaiti and expatriate residents.

He explained that one of the effects is the inability of workers in the cooperative society, its markets and branches to reach their workplaces, as they are prevented from entering and exiting and cannot move in the cooperative society’s work areas in Jleeb AlShuyoukh, Abbasiya and Al-Hassawi. Most of these workers live outside the area. Also, the companies supplying all consumer and food commodities are required to enter to supply the central markets and branches with these basic needs but they are unable to enter.

Ali Hassan said, “The volunteer work team was prevented from entering the areas. This team is responsible for applying security and health safety measures for the visitors of the central market and its branches. The team also sterilizes these places and takes the temperatures of the visitors to ensure their safety before they enter the central market”.

He added that the cooperative society is also unable to complete the requirements for providing strategic stocks of basic commodities based on a letter sent by Ministry of Social Affairs, even though the strategic stockpile of some commodities and materials is sufficient for three months.

Ali Hassan called for allowing individuals, entities and companies to enter and exit the cooperative society’s work area in order to provide for the needs of citizens and expatriate residents for basic commodities. This includes the appointed director, the supervisory and administrative body operating in the cooperative society’s general administration, officials of the central market and branches, the employees therein, the volunteer team, companies, and suppliers.
