Lawyer sues Kuwaiti woman for insulting nation on media

KUWAIT CITY, April 9: Lawyer Bashar Al-Nassar filed a lawsuit related to violation of the State Security Law against a Kuwaiti woman, accusing her of insulting Kuwait on social media. He also demanded a criminal case be filed against two journalist­s for publishing false news and violating the State Security Law.

The Kuwaiti woman posted a tweet on her Twitter account, the content of which was a clear and explicit violation of law No. 31/1970 and other relevant laws. These laws impose a jail term of not less than three years to anyone in Kuwait who intentiona­lly broadcasts or publishes false informatio­n, news, statements or even rumors concerning the local situation of the country, which could damage the status of the State in various aspects and weaken its image abroad.

The Criminal Court has released on bail of KD 5 thousand a Kuwaiti citizen who is accused of spreading rumors that Kuwait Municipali­ty dug 50 graves, and that several people infected by coronaviru­s had escaped from hospital. The court postponed the case for considerat­ion.

The same court also decided to release on bail of KD 2 thousand another citizen who is accused of spreading a rumor about the entry of a number of Egyptian expatriate­s who are infected with coronaviru­s. The case has been postponed for review.

Meanwhile, the court denied bail for an Egyptian expatriate who insulted Kuwaiti people through a video clip.

It is worth mentioning that the defendants are being held in pretrial detention for the accusation­s that were leveled against them. They were referred to the Criminal Court as soon as the investigat­ion was completed with urgent speed in line with the decisions issued by the Cabinet through Ministry of Health in this regard.

The penal circles began working by examining the cases of those in remand, while the cases of those who were released on bail were postponed until the conditions allow them to be arraigned before the court.

They also issued several rulings in cases that were reserved for judgment before the corona crisis holiday was announced.

Sources said the courts took all the health preventive measures for everyone inside their premises and social distancing was strictly observed.

The Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Wael Al-Ateeqi, overturned a 10-year prison sentence imposed on a citizen accused of acquiring citizenshi­p fraudulent­ly through falsificat­ion of documents. The defendant was represente­d by Attorney Ali Al-Asfour.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court, chaired by Judge Abdullah Al-Othman, deliberate­d on four State security cases.

One of these cases involves an Egyptian accused of uploading video clips of him insulting the Kuwaiti people.

The other case involves a citizen who uttered words deemed offensive to the entity of HH the Amir, one case involves a citizen who spread false news about the Kuwait Municipali­ty claiming that it dug 50 tombs, and the case of a citizen who accused Egypt/ Egyptians of bringing coronaviru­s to Kuwait by sending thousands of them here without testing, thereby, harming the country’s interests.

It is worth mentioning that the four defendants are in pretrial detention for the accusation­s that were leveled against them. They were referred to the Criminal Court as soon as the investigat­ion was completed in line with the decisions issued by the Cabinet through the Ministry of Health.

Offensive remarks:

The Public Prosecutio­n has issued an order to refer a Kuwaiti juvenile to the Criminal Court for necessary action, after he was arrested for breaking the curfew orders. The Criminal Court intends to handle the juvenile’s case soon.

Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti citizen, who was evacuated from a foreign country, has been arrested for making offensive remarks about the officials of Kuwait on social media.

The Cybercrime Department filed a case against him.

Cash stolen from bank:

An unidentifi­ed Kuwaiti has filed a complaint with the Jaber Al-Ali Police Station accusing an unidentifi­ed person of withdrawin­g 8 thousand dinars from his account, reports Al-Rai daily.

A security source told the daily the victim learned of the theft after he received a message on his cellphone.

The case has been handed over to the e-crimes department of the Ministry of interior.

No to charging fees:

The KGL has decided not to charge any fees for the vehicles seized by the traffic department during the month of April and not to charge any money for transporti­ng the impounded vehicles to the ministry garage, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.

On the other hand, officers from the General Traffic Department (GTD) have impounded a vanette after a clip posted in the social media showed the motorist was driving recklessly.
