KPA showcases Kuwait pioneering experience in Arab food security

KUWAIT CITY, April 26: Director General of Kuwait Ports Authority Sheikh Yusuf AlAbdullah said he was assigned by relevant authoritie­s to coordinate with the General Secretaria­t of the League of Arab States before the spread of coronaviru­s and to review the Kuwaiti experience in terms of food security, which confirms Kuwait’s leadership in this field, especially in the current period that proves successes of the experiment related to the crisis created by the spread of COVID-19, reports AlAnba daily.

He added the Kuwaiti Ports Authority has been coordinati­ng with Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company to receive any Arab delegation who has the desire to acquire the necessary expertise in the field of food security and to receive wheat and grain shipment with optimal storage mechanism for them, in addition to identifyin­g the best methods for transporti­ng food grains to factories, then converting grains into baking products and other foodstuffs, and other stages of production such as packaging and distributi­on.

Al-Abdullah pointed out that at the level of the Gulf Cooperatio­n Council countries, the port authoritie­s have been communicat­ing in the crisis period to exchange experience­s on the best preventive measures against the coronaviru­s pandemic.

Meanwhile, The Public Authority for Agricultur­al Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) has confirmed that it is in the process of increasing milk subsidy at an unpreceden­ted rate of about 50 percent -- from 80 to 120 fils, in addition to increasing the subsidies for breeders and farmers; while it will proceed with the withdrawal of unproducti­ve agricultur­al plots once the legal period ends, reports Al-Anba daily quoting an official source.

The source said the PAAAFR is currently coordinati­ng with the concerned authoritie­s to facilitate the exit of veterinari­ans from Jleeb Al-Shuyouk in order to increase manpower in the field of animal immunizati­on to accomplish the tasks of the breeders quickly and expedite the delivery of subsidies to them.

The source also affirmed the continuati­on of granting feeds during the month of Ramadan every day -- except Friday and Saturday -- from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. The source added the reduction of feed prices, if approved, will be applied on the most in demand categories -- barley and ‘shawar’.

The source added the PAAAFR is keen on supporting producers for the agricultur­ists to devote time in maintainin­g food security in various aspects.
