Rohingya refugees floating at sea:

At least 29 Rohingya refugees from a fishing boat floating for weeks in the Bay of Bengal have landed on an island in southern Bangladesh, officials said Sunday.

The refugees, including 15 women and six children, landed on Bhasan Char island on Saturday and are believed to be from one of several boats stuck at sea, said Tonmoy Das, the chief local government official in Noakhali district.

Das said food, doctors and a team of 10 policemen were sent to the island to take care of the refugees.

An official from Bangladesh’s Refugee Commission­er’s office in Cox’s Bazar district said the office was aware of the developmen­t. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. (AP)

3 Indian soldiers killed:

Rebels fighting against Indian rule ambushed a group of paramilita­ry soldiers in Kashmir on Monday, killing three of them, an official said, an escalation in fighting in the disputed Himalayan region in recent weeks despite a stringent lockdown to combat the coronaviru­s. A teenage boy was also killed in the attack.

Rebels attacked a patrol party in the northweste­rn Handwara area, said Gul Junaid Khan, a paramilita­ry official. He said the militants fled after carrying out the attack. (AP)

Kashmir athletes struggle:

The coronaviru­s pandemic has restricted athlete Afreen Hyder to a small space in Indiancont­rolled Kashmir where she finds it difficult to do the martial arts routines she needs to keep fit.

The 20-year-old shares a two-bedroom apartment with her parents in the disputed region’s main city of Srinagar. Under the virus lockdown, she is left with only one area where she can practice Taekwondo: the apartment’s hallway. (AP)
