KDT removed 100 tons of waste from coasts in ’20
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 18: The Kuwait Dive Team (KDT), affiliated to the Environmental Voluntary Foundation, exerted extensive efforts to protect the marine environment during the year 2020. It contributed in removing 100 tons of neglected fishing nets and debris that polluted the coasts, reports Al-Qabas daily.
The team leader Walid Al-Fadhel revealed the achievements that his team realized throughout the past year.
He explained that 16 boats, ships and marine vessels of a total weight of 177 tons were removed. The operation was carried out within the project of salvaging ships, boats and maritime vessels in order to preserve the marine environment, and the safety of navigation in it.
The team lifted 100 tons of discarded fishing nets and waste that are harmful to the marine and coastal environment. The operation covered more than 20 sites along the coasts and seas of Kuwait, including the coast of Shuwaikh, Doha coast, Asherij coast, and the Kuwait Bay, with the support and sponsorship of EQUATE Petrochemical Company.
Other sites included the coast of the Kuwait Towers, Sabah Hospital Health Zone coast, the island of Umm an-Naml, and the Fahaheel dock, with the cooperation of the Tamdeen Real Estate Company. Also, waste and neglected fishing nets were removed from the islands of Qaruh and Umm al-Maradim, as well as from the south of Kuwait Bay off the coast of the Kuwait Towers. In addition, the coast of Salaam was cleaned with the cooperation of the Burgan Bank.
Al-Fadhel said the team was able to accomplish its diligent environmental activities and tasks at the rate of one environmental activity every three days during 2020, indicating that the team was therefore able to realize achievements to preserve the marine environment, secure the safety of coasts and shipping lanes, and increase environmental awareness among the various sectors of society.
He affirmed that these activities were executed with the cooperation of the Environment Public Authority (EPA), the Environmental Protection Fund, Kuwait International Bank, and the Kuwait International Petroleum Corporation.
