‘Cost of recruiting domestics at KD 990’

- By Faris Al-Abdan Al-Seyassah Staff

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 19: A new crisis over the recruitment of domestic workers is looming on the horizon, as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) confirmed recruitment of domestic workers will be done based on the old price which works out approximately to 990 dinars.

To add insult to injury, the Federation of Domestic Workers’ Offices has called for increasing the hiring price to cover the medical expenses, fees and tickets, especially these costs have shot up significantly, especially after the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, stressing that the government’s adherence to its position will prevent its recruitment.

In this context, Head of the Federation of Domestic Workers’ Offices Khaled Al-Dakhnan told the Al-Seyassah daily that the countries which export domestic workers are limited to the Philippines, India and Sri Lanka, and pointed out that these countries have raised the recruitment fees due to the repercussions of the Corona pandemic and the precautionary measures that accompany the recruitment.

He added, the travel agencies raised the prices of airline tickets, in addition to the medical examinations required for each worker, indicating that this matter greatly burdens the office owners, wishing to reconsider the old prices in light of the current developments and the limited recruitment opportunities.
