Horvat’s shootout goal sends Canucks past Canadiens 6-5

LAS VEGAS, Jan 21, (AP): Shea Theodore scored two goals, Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves and the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Arizona Coyotes 5-2.

It marks the first time the Golden Knights have started 4-0-0 in their four-year existence. They’re the first team in the NHL to reach four wins this season.

Alex Tuch added a goal and two assists, Mark Stone had a goal and an assist, and Alex Pietrangel­o scored his first goal with Vegas.

Nick Schmaltz and Phil Kessel scored for the Coyotes (1-2-1). Darcy Kuemper made 24 saves.

Sharks 2, Blues 1, SO

In St. Louis, Tomas Hertl scored the only goal in a four-round shootout to lift San Jose over St. Louis.

Marcus Sorensen scored the tying goal late in the second period and Martin Jones made 22 saves for the Sharks, who snapped a six-game losing streak to St. Louis that started in the 2019 playoffs.

Jones denied all four Blues shooters in the tiebreaker.

ICE HOCKEY

Brayden Schenn scored in his second consecutiv­e game and Jordan Binnington made 37 saves for the Blues.

San Jose appeared to get the game-winner with 11 seconds left in overtime, but the officials quickly waved it off for goaltender interferen­ce on Ryan Donato. After a replay review, the call was upheld.

Wild 3, Ducks 2

In Anaheim, Calif., Joel Eriksson Ek had a goal and an assist, including the game-winning score early in the third period, and Minnesota capped a successful season-opening road trip with a win over Anaheim.

Ryan Hartman and Nick Bonino also scored for the Wild, who have won three of their first four games. Kaapo Kahkonen made 22 saves.

Nicolas Deslaurier­s and Cam Fowler scored for the Ducks, and Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots.

Oilers 3, Maple Leafs 1

In Toronto, Leon Draisaitl broke a tie on a power play midway through the third period in Edmonton’s victory over Toronto.

Draisaitl, the reigning NHL MVP and Art Ross

Trophy winner, ended the Oilers’ 0-for-12 powerplay drought.

Kailer Yamamoto was credited with the opening goal for Edmonton after the Maple Leafs fumbled the puck into their own net in the first. Mikko Koskinen made 25 saves, and Josh Archibald scored into an empty net with 1:06 left.

Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, and Frederik Andersen made 19 saves.

Canucks 6, Canadiens 5, SO

In Vancouver, British Columbia, Bo Horvat scored the shootout winner and Vancouver overcame Tyler Toffoli’s hat trick to beat Montreal.

Horvat, the Vancouver captain, put a shot between the legs of goalie Carey Price to make the Canucks winners in their home opener.

Horvat and Brock Boeser each finished with two goals and an assist for Vancouver in regulation. Tyler Motte also scored and J.T. Miller had three assists.

Braden Holtby stopped 31 shots in regulation and overtime.

Price made 23 saves for the Canadiens, unbeaten in regulation this season. Jesper Kotkaniemi had a goal and an assist, and Brendan Gallagher scored his first of the season.

Boeser forced overtime 16:51 into the third period.

OMAHA, Nebraska, Jan 21, (AP): Nate Watson scored a career-high 29 points and Providence turned back Creighton each time it pulled close, beating the 11th-ranked Bluejays 74-70.

Providence (8-6, 4-4 Big East) won for the first time in four games and avenged a crushing loss to the Bluejays three weeks ago. Creighton (10-4, 6-3) lost its second straight after one of its worst offensive games of the season.

Alyn Breed had 15 points, David Duke added 12 and Jimmy Nichols Jr scored 10 for the Friars, who were playing the third of four straight road games.

Damien Jefferson scored a careerbest 26 points for the Bluejays. Marcus Zegarowski, who missed the previous two games with a left hamstring injury, had 17 points and Christian Bishop added 12.

Ga Tech 83, Clemson 65

In Atlanta, Georgia Tech returned from a 17-day layoff with one of its most impressive showings of the season, getting more than 20 points from three players and routing Clemson.

Michael Devoe led the way with 22 points, while Moses Wright and Jordan Usher chipped in with 21 apiece.

The Yellow Jackets (7-3, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a ninepoint halftime lead and handed the Tigers their second straight blowout loss.

Aamir Simms scored 19 points to lead the Tigers (9-3, 3-3). Clemson shot 52% from the field and was hurt by 20 turnovers.

Houston 86, Tulsa 59

In Houston, Marcus Sasser scored 26 points, Quentin Grimes added 18 points and seven rebounds as Houston avenged its only loss of the season.

Sasser, who scored 18 points in the first half, finished 8 of 15 from the field, including 6 of 12 on 3-pointers. Tramon Mark had 11 points and six rebounds for the Cougars.

Houston (12-1, 7-1 American) shot 43%, including 13 of 32 on 3-pointers. The Cougars outrebound­ed Tulsa 52-24, and had a 26-7 advantage in second-chance points.

The Cougars won their fifth straight since falling to the Golden Hurricane 65-64 in Tulsa on Dec. 29. Wisconsin 68, Northweste­rn 52

In Madison, Wisconsin, Tyler Wahl paced a balanced attack with 14 points and Wisconsin pulled away in the second half in a win over Northweste­rn.

BASKETBALL

D’Mitrik Trice added 12 points, Brad Davison 11 and Potter 10 for Wisconsin (12-3, 6-2 Big Ten).

Chase Audige had 16 points and Miller Kopp 10 for Northweste­rn (6-7, 3-6), which has lost six straight.

Boise St. 73, Fresno St. 51

In Boise, Idaho, Derrick Alston Jr. had 21 points as Boise State won its 13th consecutiv­e game, easily defeating Fresno State 73-51.

Marcus Shaver Jr had 17 points and six rebounds for Boise State (13-1, 9-0 Mountain West Conference). Abu Kigab added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mladen Armus had eight rebounds.

Arkansas 75, Auburn 73

In Fayettevil­le, Arkansas, Desi Sills scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half to help Arkansas rally from a 12-point halftime deficit, and then hold on to beat Auburn 75-73.

Sills scored four straight points during an 18-10 run to give Arkansas a 74-66 lead, its largest of the game coming with 2:40 to play. The Razorbacks trailed the entire first half and by 10 points early in the second.

Washington 84, Colorado 80

In Seattle, Marcus Tsohonis scored a career-high 27 off the bench, Erik Stevenson added 17 points before fouling out, and Washington picked up its first conference win of the season beating Colorado 84-80.

Tsohonis was brilliant providing the Huskies (2-11, 1-7 Pac-12).

Radford 67, Campbell 61

In Buies Creek, N.C., Dravon Mangum had 16 points and nine rebounds as Radford topped Campbell 67-61.

Chyree Walker had 11 points and seven rebounds for Radford (10-6, 9-1 Big South Conference), which won its sixth straight game. Lewis Djonkam added 10 points and nine rebounds.

VMI 74, Furman 73

In Lexington, Va., Greg Parham had 24 points as VMI narrowly defeated Furman 74-73.

Jake Stephens had 15 points and 14 rebounds for VMI (8-7, 3-3 Southern Conference). Trey Bonham added 13 points. Sean Conway had 12 points.
