No. 7 Michigan uses strong defense to pummel Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, Jan 23, (AP): Isaiah Livers matched his season high with 22 points, Eli Brooks added 11 and No. 7 Michigan relied on a staunch defense to beat Purdue 70-53.

The Wolverines (13-1, 8-1 Big Ten) maintained their strangleho­ld on the conference lead by winning their fifth straight in the series.

Trevion Williams had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Boilermake­rs, who never led as their four-game winning streak came to an end. Purdue (11-6, 5-4) played without guard Sasha Stefanovic, its top 3-point shooter, after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Michigan took full advantage of absence by limiting Purdue to 32.1% shooting and shutting out the Boilermake­rs from 3-point range in the first half as they took a 34-21 lead.

Purdue made its first two 3s in the second half and cut the deficit to 42-32 with 14:58 to play. But the Wolverines answered with six straight points.

Oakland 86, Detroit 81

In Oakland, Michigan, Jalen Moore had a triple-double with 18 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds to carry Oakland to win over Detroit.

Zion Young scored a career-high 28 points for Oakland (6-12, 6-5 Horizon League), which earned its fourth consecutiv­e home victory. Daniel Oladapo added 18 points. Micah Parrish had seven rebounds.

Rashad Williams, the Golden Grizzlies’ second leading scorer heading into the contest at 14 points per game, scored only six points (0 of 11). Grand Canyon 77, Dixie St 74

In St. Goerge, Utah, Mikey Dixon had 17 points as Grand Canyon edged past Dixie State. Asbjorn Midtgaard added 16 points for the Antelopes, while Jovan Blacksher Jr. chipped in 15. Midtgaard also had 10 rebounds.

Cleveland St 64, Milwaukee 53

In Cleveland, Craig Beaudion had a season-high 25 points as Cleveland State topped Milwaukee.

Beaudion made 8 of 10 shots. He added six rebounds.

Torrey Patton had 13 points for Cleveland State (10-4, 10-1 Horizon League), which earned its fifth straight home victory. Tre Gomillion added 10 points and eight rebounds. D’Moi Hodge had six rebounds.

CSU Fullerton 83, Hawaii 67

In Fullerton, California, Tray Maddox Jr. scored 23 points as Cal State Fullerton topped Hawaii. Dante Maddox Jr. added 20 points for the Titans.

Tray Maddox shot 5 for 7 on 3-pointers. Vincent Lee had 14 points for Cal State Fullerton (4-4, 3-4 Big West Conference). Doctor Bradley added 13 points.

San Diego St 98, Air Force 61

In Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jordan Schakel had 18 points to lead five San Diego State players in double figures as the Aztecs easily defeated Air Force.

Aguek Arop and Adam Seiko added 14 points apiece for the Aztecs. Keith Dinwiddie Jr. and Nathan Mensah chipped in 13 points each.

UTEP 82, Louisiana Tech 74

In El Paso, Texas, Bryson Williams had 28 points as UTEP defeated Louisiana Tech.

Souley Boum added 24 points for the Miners. Boum also had 11 rebounds.

Keonte Kennedy had 13 points and six assists for UTEP (7-6, 3-4 Conference USA). Jamal Bieniemy added seven rebounds and six assists.
