KUWAIT CITY, Oct 19: The Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of the First Instance Court, which sentenced a citizen to two years in prison with hard labor and fined him KD5,000 for threatening and blackmailing a female compatriot, while the civil aspect of the case was referred to the concerned court, reports Al-Anba daily.

Case files indicated the accused was referred for trial after investigations, supported by evidence. He admitted to hacking the victim’s iCloud email to steal her photos and video clips, which he used to threaten her that he will expose the pictures and videos unless the victim gives him jewelry, precious watches and KD20,000.

The victim said she got to know the accused through a social media platform and then he proposed to her through her relatives in order to gain her trust. After getting her photos and video clips, he revealed another face and confirmed he was not serious about the engagement. When she gave the jewelry and money, she asked him to stop blackmailing her, but he continued with the threats, prompting her to inform her family, who then urged her to file a complaint against him.

The victim’s lawyer, Attorney Alaa Al-Saidi, submitted a complaint to the Public Prosecution where she proved that the accused illegally accessed her client’s phone. She revealed that she will ask the civil court to oblige the accused to pay compensation for the material and moral damages incurred by her client as a result of her exposure to extortion, threats, intimidation, and seizure of her jewelry and money, thereby, depriving her of her right to enjoy such possessions.
