‘Kuwaiti constitution product of people with enlightened minds’
KUWAIT CITY, Nov 10, (KUNA): The Center for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies organized on Wednesday a symposium entitled ‘60 years since the issuance of the Constitution of the State of Kuwait’ under the auspices of the Director of Kuwait University Dr. Yousef Al-Roumi, in conjunction with the anniversary of the issuance of the Kuwaiti constitution.
Professor of Politi- cal Science at Kuwait University Dr. Ghanem Al-Najjar said during his lecture at the symposium that the Kuwaiti constitution is the product of a people carrying an enlightened thought that reflects the nature of the political situation in the country.
Al-Najjar explained that the drafting of the constitution and its texts came through the Constituent Assembly led by the late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah and headed by Abdul Latif Thunayan Al-Ghanim, as the assembly approved the formation of a five-member committee to prepare the articles of the constitution.
He indicated that the constitution came to regulate life in Kuwait, including regulating the relationship between the ruler and the ruled, and with the efforts of advisors who worked on discussing its articles for 11 months to come up with an integrated constitution that would enhance the transformation of Kuwait into a state of effective institutions.
Al-Najjar added that the parliamentary life came as a complement to the texts and principles of the constitution, which enhances democracy and popular participation in the legislative authority through elections, which is a culture implanted by the Kuwaiti people.
He explained that Kuwait witnessed a popular development and movement at the political, social and cultural levels in the phase prior to the issuance of the constitution, stressing that the country witnessed political openness with the accession of the late Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem AlSabah to power on February 25, 1950.
