Burgan Club striving for third against Oman as Al-Arabi & Al-Deir battle for group supremacy

DOHA, Feb 28:The inaugural handball team of Burgan Club has completed its preliminar­y round matches in the Gulf Cup Winners Club Championsh­ip’s 40th edition, currently hosted by Al Arabi Club in Doha.

The tournament will run until March 5, with Burgan set to face Oman at 4 pm today in the Lusail Hall as part of the final round.

The third and concluding match within the same group will follow at six in the evening, featuring Al-Arabi of Qatar and Al-Deir of Bahrain.

Having faced defeats in its previous two matches against Al-Deir and Al-Arabi, Burgan has been eliminated from contention for the Gulf title.

Today’s match against Oman will determine the third-place team, which will then compete against the fourth-placed team in the consolatio­n rounds on the upcoming Sunday.

In the meantime, Al-Arabi and Al-Deir are slated to clash, deciding the first and second positions within the group after both teams secured their spots in the semi-finals during the previous round.

As it stands, Al-Arabi leads the group standings with 4 points, edging out Al-Deir in second place based on goal difference.

Burgan is in third place, while Oman sits in fourth place without any points.

Sameh Al-Hajri, the manager of Kuwait Club, emphasized that “AlAbyad’s” participat­ion in the tournament is geared towards defending the title won last year against the Bahraini team on their home turf. Al-Hajri expressed ambitious goals, citing the unwavering support from the club’s board of directors, led by Khaled Al-Ghanem.

He further stated that Kuwait Club faces numerous upcoming obligation­s this season, including the Super Cup, the League Championsh­ip, and the Al-Ittihad Diamonds locally, in addition to external commitment­s. Adequate preparatio­n for each tournament is deemed crucial by Al-Hajri.
