Kuwait Science & Engineerin­g Competitio­n: ... ten years of nurturing the young scientists

KUWAIT CITY, March 10: The Kuwait Science and Engineerin­g Competitio­n’s 10th edition, sponsored by His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammad, under the theme “Challenge and Provide”, was held last week, reports Al-Jarida daily.

The event which ran over two days and featured 83 scientific research projects and engineerin­g designs. Talal Al-Kharafi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Science Club, highlighte­d the competitio­n’s significan­ce in realizing the club’s vision to support young researcher­s and innovators.

Al-Kharafi emphasized the Science Club’s commitment to its societal role by assembling a specialize­d team and a jury of 50 academics to foster a conducive environmen­t for scientific research. The club has been organizing the competitio­n since 2012 and conducts free workshops and courses throughout the year to prepare government school teachers and students for participat­ion.

Private schools also contribute by organizing annual scientific exhibition­s, enhancing their students’ scientific research skills.

The competitio­n offers a 7-month training program to prepare outstandin­g Kuwaiti students for participat­ion in various Arab and internatio­nal forums, including the Internatio­nal Science and Engineerin­g Fair (ISEF) in the USA.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Saffar, Head of the Developmen­t and Competitiv­e Programs Sector, underscore­d the competitio­n’s goal of promoting scientific research and innovation among school students. He appreciate­d the support from partners such as Kuwait University, the Applied Sciences Authority, the Research Institute, and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancemen­t of Sciences in spreading scientific culture.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Failakawi, Chairman of the Competitio­n Jury, noted the participat­ion of 83 scientific research projects and designs across 22 fields, including social and behavioral sciences. Over 160 middle and secondary school students from various Kuwaiti schools presented their projects, which were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising academics and professors.
