Registration for Assembly poll 2024 ends
KUWAIT CITY, March 13: The Election Affairs Department (EAD) has wrapped up the registration process for candidates vying in the 2024 National Assembly elections after a 10-day period that commenced on the March 4, 2024, reports Al-Jarida daily.
With yesterday seeing the addition of 17 new candidates, the total count reached 221 applicants, including 7 women.
Following the withdrawal of two candidates, the tally stood at 219, with 47 members from the dissolved 2023 Council among
them, while Dr. Hassan Johar, Osama Al-Shaheen, and Daoud Marafi opted not to run.
The candidates highlighted political conflicts as a primary cause of instability in the country, emphasizing the urgent need for reforms across various sectors to enhance citizen services.
They urged authorities to develop programs and laws to establish a welfare state and enhance citizens’ quality of life.
Reflecting on past councils, candidates expressed dissatisfaction with the invalidated 2022 council and questioned the effectiveness of the 2023 council, stressing the importance of delivering tangible benefits to citizens. Candidates from various districts articulated their commitment to addressing societal concerns and urged active participation in the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, the presence of female candidates, including Nawal Aba Al Khail in the fourth district, underscores a growing trend towards gender diversity in electoral representation. With two candidates withdrawing their candidacy yesterday, the focus now shifts to the forthcoming electoral process as Kuwait prepares for the 2024 National Assembly elections.
