Latest edition

- By Sami Al-Khorafi

Who, of us, is not keen on getting the latest mobile phone or at least equipping it with applications like Twitter and Instagram? We keep asking about the latest updates to download them and avoid previous bugs and so on. The question, here is: How many of us tend to change their bad temper in dealing with others and ‘update’ or improve it?

How can we be happy when all hearts are filled with envy towards whoever feels happy or succeeds in his life? How can we be happy when everybody looks down upon others? I know some people who are keen to stand in front rows while praying while their hearts are full of grudges for those standing next to them. It seems that these people forget to wash their hearts during ablution. In fact, there are so many forms of bad conduct that one cannot write them in one article.

Our beloved Prophet (PBUH) said: “Those closest to me on doomsday will be the ones with best manners”. The Prophet (PBUH) did not refer to those ranking higher or descending from prestigious families. He stressed that those with good conduct and supreme ethics would have a ‘VIP’ seat booked for them beside him in heaven. Why did he focus on this? Well, from my point of view, the answer is that an outstanding place requires constant training and selfrestraint, which is not an easy task. I recall a story about one of the Prophet’s (PBUH) companions, about whom for three days, the Prophet (PBUH) kept telling those sitting with him that a man destined to paradise would come in. This happened on three consecutive days and people got very curious about this mysterious visitor and wanted to know why he would go to paradise. After three days, this companion said that he never goes to bed holding any grudge or hard feelings towards anybody.

So, we can start ‘updating’ our souls by removing any grudges, lies, meanness, greed or ‘insulting’ tongues and gradually substituting them with good traits, which is not easy for so many people and not hard for those determined to do it and change for the better to make this life more beautiful, happy and easy.

Life is too short to waste on trivialities and bad conduct. We should, instead, race to purify it and keep ‘updating’ and improving ourselves. Let us start by forgiving those who did us wrong. Let us socialize with those who had stopped seeing us. Let us be tolerant. Such ‘updates’ will surely get us to the top and the ‘latest edition’ of ethics!
