‘Kuwait keen on alleviatin­g suffering’

KUWAIT: First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah reaffirmed yesterday Kuwait’s firmness on strengthen­ing capabiliti­es to cope with lingering humanitari­an crises.

Speaking on behalf of Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Minister of Electricit­y and Water Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah made the comments during the 6th Conference on Effective Partnershi­p and Informatio­n Sharing for Better Humanitari­an Action.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled said that the Arabian Peninsula is bearing the brunt of deteriorat­ing human conditions, calling on increased cooperatio­n amongst internatio­nal organizati­ons to combat these crises that have plagued the world for generation­s.

Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled underscore­d the calamity of the Syrian crisis, highlighti­ng the fact that the war has claimed a staggering 250,000 lives, resulting in the biggest group of refugees in the world. He also decried internatio­nal inaction in bringing an end to such an immense humanitari­an crisis.

The Foreign Minister also extolled Kuwait’s persistent efforts in mitigating the suffering of Syrian refugees. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled looked forward to the first ever World Humanitari­an Summit to be hosted by Turkey in May 2016, saying the summit provides an opportunit­y for action needed to alleviate human suffering across the globe. — KUNA
