West is not better than us

- By Arwa Al-Waqian

Whenever your own society bullies, hates and ostracizes you, you will have no option but to hate it back, hate its individuals and reject its traditions and customs and probably its religion as well, because you will find that others keep advising you with the excuse that ‘religion is the opium of the masses’. I am not here praising Western countries, because they are not better than us, but because they discovered at an early stage how the human nature accepts violence, sarcasm, harassment and violating others’ privacy. This is why laws were set to incriminate bullying and hate. Laws deem any person using racial discrimination legally accountable, and so many people avoid insulting others not because they have profound manners or respect others, but because of fear of legal accountability.

Therefore, we are on a constant run from real life that overburdens us by bearing with strangers’ curiosity, relatives’ nosiness and hatred if you are any different from the rest of the herd. We have recently started flying to countries that respect and value liberties, where we can live the simple life we have always dreamt of.

In our societies, simplicity is restricted to the poor, extravaganza is the culture of religious people and passion is a secret we only reveal to the sick and needy. The West is no better than us. We have as intelligent and creative minds. Our problem is that we are living in societies that violate privacy and incriminate people for being ‘different’. This is the true problem that cannot be solved unless by setting laws incriminating hatred and those showing it.

Finally, one has to always remember how small he is in an enormous world, and that he has no right in judging others and making choices for them!
