East­ern Su­dan power grid, Kuwait-sup­ported project

KASSALA: In a few months, the east­ern prov­ince of Su­dan will wit­ness the com­ple­tion of the east power grid which will pro­vide elec­tric­ity and en­ergy to the area. The $200 mil­lion­pro­ject, in which the Kuwait Fund for Ara­bic Eco­nomic De­vel­op­ment (KFAED) pro­vided a sum of $165 mil­lion, was ap­proved by the in­ter­na­tional donors’ con­fer­ence for Su­dan hosted by Kuwait on De­cem­ber first and sec­ond of 2010. The event gath­ered around $3.5 bil­lion for the sake of de­vel­op­ing Su­dan. Speak­ing about this is­sue, Ex­ec­u­tive Di­rec­tor of the East Su­dan De­vel­op­ment Fund, Abu Obaida Mo­hamed Duj told KUNA that the power grid will help pro­vide elec­tric­ity to some 650 towns and vil­lages, re­veal­ing that 700,000 sub­scribers will ben­e­fit from the project.

The in­fra­struc­ture for the project is al­ready in place, said Duj, adding that elec­tric­ity will be pro­vided as soon as pos­si­ble. The of­fi­cial took the chance to thank the Kuwaiti lead­er­ship and peo­ple for their gen­er­ous in­put, af­firm­ing that the whole project would not have taken off with­out the as­sis­tance of the fel­low Arab coun­try. Se­nior of­fi­cials at the Kassala state also ex­pressed their grat­i­tude to Kuwait and hoped that the project will be swiftly launched so that elec­tric­ity could flow to the re­gion.— KUNA
