Kuwait reaffirms stance on having Arab seat in UNSC
DOHA: Kuwait has stressed yesterday the importance of reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to improve and bring more transparency to the Council’s work. Head of Kuwait’s permanent mission to the UN headquarters’ in New York, Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi said that part of the reforms should include fair Arab representation at the UNSC, appropriate with the number of Arab countries and Arab issues discussed by the Council’s agenda.
Otaibi; coordinator of the Arab Group on the Council reform, added that UNSC reform can only be realized by bringing greater transparency to the work of the Council and increasing its members according to standards and regulations that would create a fair balance in representation and efficiency in performance. The reform is still under consideration since talks on the matter began 23 years ago, it is important to find new mechanisms to expand membership at the council, he said.
The meeting, which Qatar called for, came after the UNSC failure in carrying out its responsibilities in underscoring the importance of fast reform. Thirty Members are participating in the two-day meeting, along with the President of the 71st UN General Assembly Peter Thomson and the Co-Chairmen of the InterGovernmental Negotiation on Security Council Reform Ambassador Mohammad Khairi of Tunisia. —KUNA
