Shocking answers

- By Saleh Al-Sayeji

Of the seven countries subjected to the 90day ban on entry to the United States, only Iran made threats against the US. And in an expected action, the parliament in Iraq - that is heavily influenced by Iran - called for discussion on President Donald Trump’s executive order.

In fact, taking into account how shocking its followers’ reactions usually are, perhaps Iran’s threats are not all that strange. For instance, Hamas threatened Israel with a ‘shocking’ reaction to the killing of Ahmed Yaseen 13 years ago. That was followed by another threat for the killing of Abdul Aziz Al-Rantisi. Israel is still waiting for both!

The Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon is also addicted to ‘shocking’ responses, threatening Israel after the assassination of Emad Mughniyya and issuing a series of threats whenever a party leader is assassinated. Those threats have accumulated, piling up while Israel is still waiting. I believe Israel is about to file a complaint at the UN, urging Hamas and Hezbollah to carry out their ‘shocking threats’!

Back to the US. What steps can Iran take in response to President Trump’s ban? What does it have as leverage, or is it merely the same old fuss from Tehran and its followers that the world has grown accustomed to? Why doesn’t Iran focus on the interests of its people, instead of making idle threats it is incapable of carrying out?

For over 40 years now, Iran has been carrying out all forms of evil. All it has got in return is the misery of its people, poverty and the world’s hatred. How long will its leaders maintain this disgraceful situation? The great nation of Persia, which greatly contributed to building civilization, deserves more!
