Kuwaiti hornets

- By Saad Al-Mo’tesh —Translated by Kuwait Times

All creatures have a special language through which they communicate, but people do not understand those languages. We do know the names of some creatures, but at the same time know nothing about others. We name birds according to what our ancestors taught us, without even knowing who invented those names.

Just imagine, if all birds used the same language, how much the amount of slanderous words they would use while being chased by falcons or larger predators in pursuit to kill and devour them. Also, imagine how deer or other ruminants would beg for their lives when facing predatory animals in the jungle. People have been using a general name for the sounds made by all flying insects; that is humming or buzzing, which is a sound resulting from the rapid movement of their wings. However, we still do not know how they communicate with each other.

The only exception in those insects are hornets which make a sound locally known as buzzing and that is why people usually say ‘he buzzed destroying his own nest’ to refer to someone who brings damage upon oneself when attacked. The worst enemies to bees are European greenfinches and hornets. The former are hunted with shotguns or recorded sounds of shotguns, while hornets are usually fought by being hit by shoes because they deserve nothing more.

If anyone thinks this article is referring to them who buzz like a hornet, I have no interest in what you think. And those who fit the description of hornets must beware not to buzz-down their own nest because the bees will never let them fool around their hive.
