Grandi applauds Kuwait’s generous contributi­ons to UN relief efforts

The United Nations High Commission­er for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi said Thursday the State of Kuwait is one of the major donors for the UN humanitari­an efforts. Grandi thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Kuwaiti government and people for their constant support to the UN aid agencies. He made the comments during a reception, hosted by Kuwait Ambassador to the United States Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and his wife Sheikha Reema Al-Sabah, according to a statement by Kuwait Embassy here. He also commended Kuwait for hosting the three internatio­nal humanitari­an pledging conference on Syria and co-hosting, with Britain, Germany and Norway, the fourth such conference in London. Kuwait is also lobbying with the European Union for a fifth donor conference for the displaced Syrians, due in Brussels later this year, he noted. The UN senior official appreciate­d the philanthro­pic efforts, being made by Sheikha Reema the goodwill ambassador of the Office of the United Nations High Commission­er for Refugees (UNHCR) and her support to refugees across the Arab region and beyond.

The reception gathered a large number of US senior officials and congressme­n, including Secretary of the Homeland Security John F Kelly and Head of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ed Royce and Deputy National Security Advisor to the President K T McFarland. —KUNA
