New hypocrites

- By Saad Al-Motesh

Ihave never believed in the old saying “A thief was told to swear he is innocent and he responded ‘What a relief!’”. Therefore, Kuwaiti laws do not ask any defendants to swear or take an oath concerning the charges pressed. Instead, the law asks witnesses to take the oath after stating their personal details. Taking such oaths has become very easy nowadays - easier than a sip of water.

Thus, to all those who dishonestly swear by Allah’s name, you have to remember the Prophet’s (PBUH) saying about the three main characteristics of a hypocrite. The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The signs of a hypocrite are three: 1. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie. 2. Whenever he promises, he always breaks it (his promise).

3. If you trust him, he proves to be dishonest. (If you keep something as a trust with him, he will not return it.)”

So, liars must be reminded of this, if only they understand it!

Some people are happy that they can only pay KD 10 as kafarat yameen (religious expiation for a broken oath) in charity. Well, I would like to remind them of the above hadith and note that mere talking about untrue things is lying and promising to do things without actually keeping such promises is a clear trait of hypocrites, especially those who swear by Allah’s name.

Finally, to all those who believe liars when swearing by Allah’s name, beware and pay due attention to the hadith’s description - they always tell lies and break promises. So, never trust them with anything because they are not trustworthy! — Translated by Kuwait Times
