Iraqi mayor alleges Kuwaiti violations against fishermen

The mayor of Faw in Basra Waleed Al-Shareefi urged the Iraqi government to intervene to end what he described as violations committed by Kuwaiti marine patrols against Iraqi fishermen. Shareefi claimed an Iraqi fisherman was shot in the abdomen by a Kuwaiti marine patrol in Khor Abdullah, while other fishermen escaped to avoid injury. He added that ‘Kuwaiti harassments’ continued in Iraqi national waters and said that many objections and problems would have been made if the injured fisherman was Kuwaiti. Notably, Basra governorate member Ghanem Hamed Saleh said the Iraqi fishing boat was shot at dawn yesterday by a Kuwaiti marine boat while inside Iraqi national waters, injuring a fisherman. The Kuwaiti side insisted that the Iraqi boat had violated Kuwaiti waters.

Power generation

The Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation (APICORP) said Kuwait’s estimated power generation capability in 2016 is 17,000 megawatts, and it needs to reach 23,000 megawatts by 2021, which calls for investing $14 billion in the medium run. APICORP added that the energy sector is currently building five projects that are expected to add 6,000 megawatts of electricity, including the North Zour refineries 1 and 2 (respectively producing 1,500 and 1,800 megawatts) and Al-Khairan project (2,500 megawatts), which is the first public-private-partnership (PPP) project.

Egyptian manpower

Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Minister of State Economic Affairs Hind Al-Sabeeh that she discussed electronically linking the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MSAL) and the Egyptian ministry of manpower with her Egyptian counterpart Mohammed Safan. Sabeeh added that the e-connection would include registering job applications as well as signing and delivering contracts. Sabeeh noted that the e-connection would be initially made with Egypt before extending it to other GCC states.
