The articles thief

- By Ali Khajah — Translated by Kuwait Times

Weeks ago, a writer who is supposedly religious posted a video of an old man speaking the Kuwaiti dialect with an accent of Kuwaiti or Persian origins. The writer made sarcastic comments about the accent, and implying that he lives in a certain area inhabited by a majority of citizens with Persian origins. However, when followers warned him that the old man comes from a well-known honorable family ‘AlKandari,’ that man, with religious looks only, who is famous amongst journalists for being an articles’ thief, deleted his post. I personally believe that the disaster was not in the tweet that the ‘articles’ thief’ had posted, nor in the satirical remarks he made. The real problem lies in the fact that he deleted his post after realizing that the honorable old man belonged to Al-Kandari family. Personally, I believe there is no harm when people speak different accents in Kuwait because all of us have migrated here from various places surrounding Kuwait.

There are many accents of migrants originating from north, south, east or west. It is also alright to imitate those accents for comic reasons in drama such as the role played by comedian Dawood Hussein in the famous play ‘Vote for Um Ali,’ the character of ‘Nahhash Fata Al-Jabal’ and many others. This is acceptable worldwide.

However, deleting the tweet reflects the ill intentions of the ‘articles’ thief.’ Why did he delete it? Has the man’s accent disappeared on realizing he is a Kandari family member? Or did he intend to mock a certain sect before realizing that his attempt was useless and decided to delete the post? That is the bottom line of the whole issue because his motive was to get at a certain sect rather than mocking it. People have not noticed this, and focused more on the old man’s identity. That has always been our problem. We are being too superficial without scrutinizing or comprehending, and that is the reason of all our everyday problems.
