The baker killer

- By Saleh Al-Shayeji

Corruption is not limited to looting funds, unlawfully piling heaps of money, abuse of powers and positions and recommending the nearest and dearest for certain positions in order to them profiteer. It is not limited to theft, manipulation, forgery and cheating for the sake of profiteering and enlarging bank accounts, either. There is another serious type of corruption that is more spiritual and unseen; that is empowering inappropriate people and giving them more liabilities, enabling them to control the destiny of people and the country as a whole.

Those corrupt people will always find ways to seize opportunities without being deterred by shame, because they have none. They also lack the virtue of observing their dignity regardless of how many times they get scolded or insulted. Unfortunately, there are too many in our country. They have stolen our history, mutilated our present and darkened our future. They have given us their old worn out attires, dug graves of our ancestors and scattered their remains out to be carried away by the wind.

They do not wish us to have any history or heritage. It really provokes them that our country still exists. They would like to push us into caves of darkness or even graves if they could. Those corrupt people are stealing an entire country with all its history, people, wealth and achievements. They are more dangerous than public fund looters because their corruption is more like an unseen cancer tumor silently spreading in this nation’s body.

Unlike financially corrupt people who wish to steal more and more funds, this other type of unseen corrupt people wish that neither Kuwait nor the Kuwaiti people should exist. So, we are facing two types of corrupt people; those who steal our ‘bread’ and those who want to kill the ‘baker’ himself. Both are dangerous and both will remain enemies no matter how many times they change their appearances and sweet-talk us, hiding behind virtuous looks. —Translated by Kuwait Times
