A bloody will

- By Saleh Al-Sahyeji

Has the criminal who shot dead 24 Christian Egyptians in the Egyptian city of Minya last Friday, one day before Ramadan, really mean to kill Christians? Of course he did not. It was not his nor whoever pulled his leg into such an endless circle of death’s intention to kill Christians. They only meant to kill Egyptians inside Egypt. That is simply the point and this is proven by the fact that more Muslims have been killed than Christians. According to Egyptian reports, the majority of army or police personnel killed in terrorist attacks are Muslims.

In addition, the victims in any terrorist attack are not selected according to their religion. The main aim of the attack’s planner or executor is making it happen in Egypt against Egyptians regardless of victims’ religious affiliations. I am not saying this to reassure Christians nor to generalize the crime and not limiting it to the identity of the executor. These are facts as victims’ identities are usually highlighted when an explosion takes place in a Church or a Christian congregation, which is not done if the terrorist attack takes place in a public place that does not represent a certain identity.

Saying this, I would not want our Christian friends and brothers to get carried away into illusions that they are targeted because of their different beliefs compared to the majority of Egyptians. However, I will not warn them of falling into a sectarian tumult because I am very sure they will not fall for such tricks because they are well aware of facts and know for sure that the main target of such attacks is Egypt as a whole including all Muslim and Christian Egyptians. That is why they fear more for their country’s safety. They know that the killers haunting them have also killed Muslims. Thus, it will be silly to repeat stereotype clichÈs that those terrorists are committing such crimes to go to Heaven. They rather do it because of their thirst for blood and bloody actions.—Translated by Kuwait Times
