Foreign Minister attends UN reforms high-level meeting
Kuwait’s humanitarian efforts praised
Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah alKhaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah chaired his country’s delegation Monday to a high-level meeting over UN reforms, which was headed by US President Donald Trump. The meeting, held on sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York, aimed at supporting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ plan to reform the UN and its agencies to improve their operations. Kuwait had ratified the political declaration of the UN reforms.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled participated in the Arab Ministerial Contact Group on Palestine, which discussed support for the Palestinian economy and institutions. The participants also discussed the means to enable the Palestinian people to regain their legitimate rights and the establishment of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled also participated in an Arab foreign ministers’ consultative meeting to discuss Palestine, Syrian crisis, Iraq, Yemen and Libya.
Humanitarian contribution
Separately, UN Special Envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad has commended Kuwait for its contributions to help the Yemeni people, especially in the humanitarian domain. He made the remarks during a meeting with Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah in New York.
In the meantime, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative to Syria Staffan de Mistura thanked Kuwait for its humanitarian contributions to alleviate suffering of the Syrian people. He made his remarks during a meeting with Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, in which the two officials discussed the Syrian conflict and international efforts to solve it. The meeting, held on sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings, was attended by Assistant Foreign Minister for the Foreign Minister’s Office Ambassador Sheikh Dr Ahmad Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s permanent representative to the UN Mansour Al-Otaibi and Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations Nasser Al-Hayyen.
Also, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom hoped that solid cooperation with Kuwait would continue, as the two countries would be non-permanent UN Security Council (UNSC) members in 2018. This came during her meeting with Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled, during which the top diplomats discussed regional and international issues, as well as bilateral relations.
In other news, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled held talks in New York with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour on regional and international issues of mutual interest. The meeting also touched upon the promotion of bilateral relations and cooperation. — KUNA
