Different time, different places

- By Saleh Al-Shayeji

Violence against Muslims in Myanmar is nothing new. It has been recurring for centuries because of the amount of hatred some Buddhists have for Muslims as a result of historical residues that go back to the day of the Mongol Empire. In fact, I came across so many painful details while reading about the situation of Muslims in Myanmar and why they often fall victims to massacres.

I do not know much about Myanmar or about the reasons behind those people’s sufferings, but I did my best to collect some information on the matter. I would not only like to talk about the sufferings of Muslims in Myanmar, but also the sufferings of Muslims in various countries all around the world.

More horrible and brutal massacres have been committed against various races and people belonging to other religions. Yet, it seems that Muslims have not been aware of them as if they had never happened, and as if those killed in the most brutal and painful ways were not human beings. Why? The answer, I believe, is simply because those other victims are not Muslims, as if mankind should only be Muslim and others should not be considered human.

The Islamic State (IS), Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, Al-Nosra, Hamas and so many other Islamic organizations have killed more Muslims than those killed by extremists in Myanmar. Nonetheless, the Muslim world did not revolt, condemn or even launch demonstrations then, as if Muslims killed by those terrorist groups are mere sacrifices they use to ‘worship’ Allah. Their feelings are only moved for Muslims in Myanmar because the ‘enemy’ is Buddhist, not Muslim!

With all the humanity in me, I do condemn and reject what is happening to the Muslims in Myanmar and to others oppressed elsewhere because of their religion or race. My sympathy is not restricted to Muslims alone, but since I am a Muslim, I would not want this nation to be used, abused and messed up with by people fooling around with Muslims’ feeling, instigating them, making up stories that never happened, fabricating photos and images and claiming that the victims seen in them are Muslims while the true incidents took place with other peoples in different times and different places! So, Oh the nation of Islam... when and how will you ever wake up?
