Kuwait’s dream islands

- By Mohammad Al-Fadhli

It is a dream that has been long awaited that we start making use of our deserted islands that had been left without any investment or activity except for the Mubarak Port. The total area of Kuwait’s islands surpasses that of countries with considerable economic powers, and where everything is invested. Let us at least dream about the two largest islands; Boubyan and Failaka.

1- Boubyan’s area is 890 square kilometers, that is five percent of Kuwait’s total area. It is larger than Singapore which is only 719 square kilometers, or Bahrain which is only 765 square kilometers and yet, it has not been taken advantage of. Just imagine if we use it the way Singapore did with its land and turned it into an international commercial and industrial hub. We do have all the potential but all we need is the decision to do so.

2- Failaka Island has been deserted ever since the Iraqi Invasion. It has a long history and was mentioned in Greek books. It covers an area of 43 square kilometers. It was known as Icarus. Just imagine if this deserted island became a center for international universities or hospitals or even an international recreational center that can attract the world’s tycoon companies specialized in recreation and international resorts. Citizens do wish that such dreams can be achieved in order to stop depending on oil, increase national income and reduce the burdens on the state’s budget.

These could be mere dreams but some countries have already beaten us to them and achieved remarkable success. We have studied good management and achievements in the university and I see that nothing can stop Kuwait from turning these islands into role models and our dreams into tangible reality.
