Speaker Ghanem to meet Bush Sr

KUWAIT: Speaker of the National Assembly Marzouq Al-Ghanem headed to the US State of Maine on a short visit to meet with former President George H W Bush, said a statement by a media source yesterday. According to Al-Destor (the constituti­on) TV channel, Speaker Ghanem is expected to deliver a written letter from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah AlAhmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Bush.

The source affirmed that Ghanem would also convey greetings from the Kuwaiti people to the former President for his historic stance during the Iraqi invasion GENEVA: Kuwait yesterday requested a grace period from the United Nations Compensati­on Commission tasked with Iraq’s dues, after its occupation of Kuwait, in 1990 and the subsequent liberation of Kuwait in 1991. The visit came on an invitation from Bush who wanted to express his gratitude to the Kuwaiti National Assembly for its support during the health setback he suffered recently, said the television channel.

Speaker Ghanem is expected to head to Geneva, Switzerlan­d, afterwards to meet with the Internatio­nal Parliament­ary Union’s (IPU) President Saber H Chowdhury ahead of the union’s conference to be held in Saint Petersburg in midOctober. — KUNA to evaluate payment options for a remaining $4.6 billion.
