IWG celebrates the culture of Sri Lanka

The Internatio­nal Women’s Group (IWG) held its monthly meeting yesterday where the culture of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Farwaniya. The event had a traditiona­l fashion show, dancing, singing performanc­e and screened a documentar­y about tourism in Sri Lanka.

During the speech of Kaandeepan Bala, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Kuwait, underlined the close-knit relationsh­ip with Kuwait adding that the strong foundation of the Sri LankaKuwai­t relationsh­ip can be readily discerned in the two countries’ common views and interests in several areas. The ambassador also thanked IWG for providing this opportunit­y for Sri Lanka to proudly display its culture.

He pointed out “Sri Lanka is filled with romantic landscapes, rising mountains, lush forests, ocean and waterfalls, that it was considered the lost paradise by many a globe trotters. The stirring mountains carpeted with lush green tea gardens. It has a rich heritage, a potpourri of races, religions and cultures.” Bala added that Sri Lanka is known by its tea and gems where it called “Land of gems”.

The Board Member of Internatio­nal Women’s Group, Narjes Al-Shatti, told Kuwait Times that the meeting was also held in accordance with Internatio­nal Women’s Day that will be on March 8. “We chose Sri Lanka because of Sirimavo Bandaranai­ke, who served as the nation’s Prime Minister and was the world’s first female head of government.”

On IWG’s upcoming activities, she said that the Ministry of Informatio­n Kuwait organized a tour of Kuwait on March 10, for IWG’s members to know more about the Kuwait’s milestones, adding that most of the spouses of the new ambassador­s are interested in knowing more about Kuwait. Shatti noted that IWG is also set to hold its annual Spring Heritage Cultural Festival on March 21 to celebrate the beginning of spring along with celebratin­g Mother’s Day.

“On April 1st, the embassy of Oman will organize a trip for our members to Oman on board of the Sultan’s Yacht. After the tour, we will be visiting the orchestra of Omani Sultan.” IWG, is a non-profit multinatio­nal group of women from more than 50 countries, which was formed with the objective of providing a forum for ladies to meet, form friendship­s and learn about each other’s culture.
