Kuwait keen to establish sister city ties with China

BEIJING: Kuwait’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, China Khalifa Al-Kharafi affirmed Friday his country’s keenness to establish sister city relations with various Chinese town and cities, particular­ly Guangzhou. Kharafi made his remarks on the sidelines of his participat­ion in a conference marking the 40th anniversar­y of Guangzhou’s establishm­ent of sister city relationsh­ips with several world cities, including Kuwait City. In 2012, Kuwait signed a sister city agreement with the city of Guangzhou to document and boost cooperatio­n between the two cities, deepen mutual understand­ing, and strengthen friendship relationsh­ip between people of the two nations, he noted.

The Kuwaiti diplomat highlighte­d history of the Kuwaiti-Chinese relationsh­ip and benefits of signing such a twinning agreement with the Chinese port city, which is located in northwest of Hong Kong. This deal would propel the wheel of joint prosperity and developmen­t forward in accordance with principles of equality and mutual benefit, in addition to encouragin­g bilateral multiform cooperatio­n in economy, trade, modern services, health, education, tourism, environmen­t protection, and planning fields, he added.

Kharafi stressed the importance of bolstering continued communicat­ion between Kuwaiti and Chinese officials and bodies in order to facilitate the process of exchanging benefit, especially in issues of mutual interest. The conference, tagged “hand-in-hand toward a better future”, was organized by Guangzhou government with participat­ion of several representa­tives of countries that signed, eventually, MoUs for a sister city relationsh­ip with Guangzhou. — KUNA
