Arab League values African solidarity with Palestine
Arab Parliament warns of expanding conflict in the region
CAIRO: Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit commended African humanitarianism and a sense of justice regarding solidarity with Palestinians during the Zionist occupation’s onslaught in the Gaza Strip. This came in a statement made on Saturday during the Arab League’s participation in the 37th African Union Summit in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
He particularly praised South Africa’s exemplary efforts in holding the Zionist occupation accountable for genocidal crimes against Palestinians and exposing them by filing a lawsuit in the International Court of Justice. Furthermore, he said the Arab League is continuing efforts to call for peace in Sudan amidst the bloodshed and armed clashes taking place, provide Sudanese people with integrity and security, and affirm the African Arab country’s territorial sovereignty.
He also affirmed the League’s support for a long-term ceasefire through the Jeddah Platform, consisting of the US, AU, Saudi Arabia, and others. Concerning the Somali issue, Abu Al-Gheit, while praising efforts in this regard this past year, also voiced the League’s full support of Somalia’s sovereignty in cooperation with the Federal Government of Somalia, the UN, and AU, as well as other regional groups. He concluded by calling for Libya to find political solutions to the obstacles taking place in the country, saying that political stability is needed to preserve the unity and sovereignty of the country.
Expanding conflict
Meanwhile, Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Al-Asoumi warned of expanding the scope of conflict in the Middle East region. Calling for activating Arab parliamentary diplomacy to limit consequences for the region’s security and stability, Al-Asoumi’s remarks came during a meeting with Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) President and Iraqi Acting Parliament Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandalawi on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Conference for South-South Cooperation hosted by Morocco.
Al-Asoumi reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s full support for Iraq, a pivotal Arab country when it comes to the region’s security and stability. He pointed out the parliament’s keenness to enhance cooperation and coordination with the Iraqi parliament in all fields, especially with Iraq’s current presidency of AIPU, adding that this would support Arab issues, including the situation in Gaza. —
