- By Shiekha Alexis De Leon

Philippine International English School’s (PIES) students recorded another impressive winning streak in Gulf University of Science and Technology (GUST) Research Contest. Althea Dimapilis and Luke Caparros, two Grade 12 STEM students from the Philippine International English School in Fahaheel, secured the top spot in the annual GUST Research Contest, which was held on February 17, 2024.

Through an inspiring demonstration of their scientific capabilities, the dynamic duo won the champion title for their ground-breaking studies on the potential of tomatoes and mangoes as an alternative substitute for sunscreen. Their project emphasized the value of eco-friendly and sustainable skincare solutions in addition to showcasing creativity. Conversely, another PIES team led by Rob Asumen and Shiekha Alexis De Leon won third place in the GUST Research Competition. Their investigation focused on clamshells’ effectiveness as a fundamental component in making sturdy hollow blocks. This project demonstrated the students’ originality producing creative solutions to problems related to construction and the environment. Last year, PIES

students also secured first and second place in the same competition, proving the school’s consistent commitment to excellence in scientific research.

Participants in the competition come from different schools, and PIES has continuously demonstrated its status as a powerhouse for exceptional STEM talent. PIES is cementing its standing as a leading institution that nurtures the upcoming generation of scientists by making waves in the GUST Research Contest. The PIES team of coaches throughout the consecutive competitions were Dr Romel Ramos, the head of the senior high school department, Kristoffer Arroyo, the coordinator of the science area, and science instructor Ivan Tolentino.
