PATEK PHILIPPE
GOLDEN ELLIPSE
After the Calatrava, the Golden Ellipse is the second oldest watch in the Patek Philippe collection, going as far back as 1968. Its bold elliptical case, (a cross between a circle and a rectangle), was inspired by the “golden section” ‒ the so-called divine proportion based on the ratio of 1:1.6181..., which has been the choice of formula for numerous architectural and artistic masterpieces since its discovery by the mathematicians in Ancient Greece. On its 50th anniversary, the Golden Ellipse traded in its blue-gold dial of a mysteriously deep shimmer, for an ebony black sunburst dial that highlights the applied hour markers and the slender baton-style hands in rose gold. Measuring at a precise 34.5mm x 39.5mm, with a crown set with an onyx cabochon, a shiny black hand-stitched alligator strap with square scales complements the timepiece, with a rose-gold prong buckle that reflects the characteristic case shape.
