WHY GO
This swanky restaurant has created waves with its bold, eclectic cuisine, ritzy ambience and inventive mixologists.
Ruyi’s sushi, a whimsical house specialty, lives up to its hype both taste-wise and looks-wise. Instead of raw fish atop vinegared rice balls, the trio of sushi-like morsels feature Hainanese chicken rice, nasi lemak and mango sticky rice.
Tongue-in-cheek names rule the roost here, as exemplified by Pandora’s Balls; lollipops of rich foie gras covered in chocolate crust with salted egg wisps; and Duck Pagoda Dreams, smoked duck breast slices meticulously wound and stacked to resemble mini pagodas.
The crab curry rice proves to be an on-point palate-pleaser; the rice with diced seafood delectably rich with creaminess of coconut milk and aromatic Indian spices comes through nicely. Bliss is certainly the word to describe the Blissful Scallop, entailing scallops and pumpkin wedges in crisp, golden batter served with a liberal sprinkling of chicken floss.
A good sweet ending here would be the passionfruit panna cotta with its refreshing tanginess and minimalist presentation.
