EDITOR’S LETTER
Here’s to a year of empowering renewal and pure confidence
There’s a classic New Yorker cartoon of ‘The Vain but Realistic Queen’, who looks into her magic mirror and asks, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, Who, if she lost ten pounds and had her eyes and neck done, and had the right haircut, could, in her age group, be the fairest one of all?” Hilarious, and doesn’t this pretty much represent our thought bubbles most mornings – a little bit of confidence with lots of need for improvement? There’s no better time to begin than January, although I do declare progress should be our true vitamin 365 days a year, preferably taken before all meals.
This issue is about new things, fresh thoughts, and original experiences to get our creative energy going in 2014. I’m loving Jeffrey Yan’s take on the Diana Vreeland invocation ‘Why Don’t You …’ (page 60), where he presents 10 fresh style ideas to turn your look into an idea – because that’s exactly what fashion is all about. Play matchy-matchy? Do full-on menswear? Wear a white shirt and nothing else? These are ideas I’d have in my thought bubble each morning. And while we’re at the mirror, there’s much to take from Li Ying Lim’s beauty feature ‘Masters of Nude’ (page 94), where she shows us how to look good in our own skin by applying the latest flawless foundations, body-perfecting serums, and polishing tools. All those, plus her insightful ‘New Beauty 2014’ of solutions (page 92) to rejuvenate our body and being. Ever considered Earthing, a deep sleep app, power ginseng, or cultivating your willpower for weight-loss? This story may change your life.
Naomi Campbell, as styled by Kenneth Goh in the Dolce & Gabbana dress and Swarovski-crystal diadem we’re all lusting afte after, is back in fashion and looking more than regal on the cover of BAZAAR. B She, with the utterly va-va-voom style, famous hipsw swinging catwalk and feline beauty to match, able to captivate bi billionaires and Nelson Mandela alike, tells us how she’s evolved from a supermodel to a super human because of her philanthropic work; as Kenneth shares his experience of shooting the supe in the c city on page 73. Bigger, brighter, and better, I often say, so take your v vitamin B every day to make this year, beautiful.
