CITY: BERLIN
If you happen to hit Berlin you simply must indulge in a good old-fashioned New York sandwich with all the trimmings. Located in a former Jewish girl’s school (with hallways decked in shades of emerald green) right in the centre of a trendy neighbourhood, Mogg & Melzer is co-owned by DJs Oskar Melzer and Paul Mogg. The two have created an artsy little bistro that serves up a mean sandwich in funky surroundings furnished with Mid-Century finds, such as antique Pirkka chairs and a vast selection of tables that sits 20, all by the late Finnish designer llmari Tapiovaara. Mogg & Melzer offers hearty American fare such as beef brisket (salted and coated with a pepper crust, then made into pastrami using a smoker in the courtyard), tantalising cucumbers pickled not in vinegar but salt, and balsamic lentils paired with baked Crottin de Chavignol and wild herbs. Scrumptious sandwiches come in two sizes on fresh rye and are topped with melted Swiss cheese served alongside succulent salted pickles. Love the coffee and homemade desserts, the matseball soup and daily specials, as well as delicatessen treats; think kosher salt or wine from Pauly Saal. 11-13, Auguststrasse, Berlin.
