Mahopac is an idyllic hamlet less than 50 miles north of New York City. It is named after the huge lake nearby, and on a sunny day, with light glistening off the water, there is nowhere else in the world that photograph­er Alexi Lubomirski would rather be. Born in England to a Peruvian mother and Polish father, Lubomirski developed his lifelong passion for photograph­y (he was given his first camera at 11) while travelling through Peru. Soon after he graduated from the University of Brighton, he met Mario Testino, who he assisted for the next four years. Now based in New York, he travels all over the world, working for major titles; his recent cover shoots for BAZAAR include Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Lubomirski married his Cuban-Italian wife Giada in Poland in August 2009 and, soon after the arrival of their son, Sole Luka (now nearly four years old), they started house-hunting outside New York for a haven that would offer the family respite from their city lives. Barrett Hill, built in 1827, is a typical colonial wooden house with a stone foundation and wooden floors and beams. Described by locals as the “crooked doll’s house”, it was the first property the family saw, and they fell in love with “this little piece of heaven”; now they spend almost every weekend and most holidays there, especially since the birth of their second son, Leone, last year.
