Ma­hopac is an idyl­lic ham­let less than 50 miles north of New York City. It is named after the huge lake nearby, and on a sunny day, with light glis­ten­ing off the wa­ter, there is nowhere else in the world that pho­tog­ra­pher Alexi Lubomirski would rather be. Born in Eng­land to a Peru­vian mother and Pol­ish fa­ther, Lubomirski de­vel­oped his life­long pas­sion for pho­tog­ra­phy (he was given his first cam­era at 11) while trav­el­ling through Peru. Soon after he grad­u­ated from the Univer­sity of Brighton, he met Mario Testino, who he as­sisted for the next four years. Now based in New York, he trav­els all over the world, work­ing for ma­jor ti­tles; his re­cent cover shoots for BAZAAR in­clude Kate Winslet, Scar­lett Jo­hans­son, Keira Knight­ley, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Lubomirski mar­ried his Cuban-Ital­ian wife Gi­ada in Poland in Au­gust 2009 and, soon after the ar­rival of their son, Sole Luka (now nearly four years old), they started house-hunt­ing out­side New York for a haven that would of­fer the fam­ily respite from their city lives. Bar­rett Hill, built in 1827, is a typ­i­cal colo­nial wooden house with a stone foun­da­tion and wooden floors and beams. De­scribed by lo­cals as the “crooked doll’s house”, it was the first prop­erty the fam­ily saw, and they fell in love with “this lit­tle piece of heaven”; now they spend almost ev­ery week­end and most hol­i­days there, es­pe­cially since the birth of their sec­ond son, Leone, last year.
