GIORGIO DAMIANI
The third-generation Damiani opens up on his role as vice president and art director, and the brand’s Italian artistry. By Amy Yasmine.
What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from your family’s 92-year-old legacy? Damiani encapsulates all the passion that my family has always had for the art of jewellery. They stand out due to their excellence based on quality, experience, and the value of the “Made in Italy” manufacturing. These are the values my brother and I inherited.
What is it about the heritage of Italian jewellery that sets its style apart from the rest?
Valenza, a district in northern Italy where high jewellery was made since 1700, is still the only place where the top brands produce their jewellery. Each jewel comes to life through commendable craftsmanship and the endless passion of master goldsmiths, enclosing within all the artistic values of the best Italian jewellery tradition.
What makes Damiani jewellery last through the ages?
We maintain our spirit as innovators with design that is always meticulous and deeply rooted in tradition, with very high quality of gems and manufacturing precision.
Where do you usually find inspiration?
Each time I start work on a new jewel, I think about the person who will wear it. I try to imagine their habits, their desires, the items they surround themselves with, and love. Situations, moments, atmospheres—these are like snapshots of life. My ideas take shape from these intuitions.
Apart from diamonds, what other gems make Damiani jewellery truly sparkle?
Before setting, each precious gem is carefully analysed and selected. We favour beautiful jewels like sapphires, rubies, emeralds, aquamarine, onyx, amethyst, and quartz.
Tell us about the beautiful collaboration with actress Nicoletta Romanoff for the Romanov collection.
Damiani and Nicoletta Romanoff are the stars of an unusual journey through time. The journey begins from the finest Italian goldsmith tradition to arrive in Russia, and then finally making its way to to Italy through the cooperation with a descendant of the Russian dynasty.
