In a con­ver­sa­tion I had the other day while pre­par­ing for this piece, I was re­minded of some­thing I had over­looked, prompt­ing me to stop and think. A wel­come per­spec­tive like this was too good to ig­nore, and as a creator it led me to a ques­tion—a ques­tion so sim­ple yet so es­o­teric I wanted all the an­swers in all their hon­esty. But be­fore we get to it, let’s clear our minds with a quick ex­er­cise I’ve adapted from my grade 6 mu­sic class. Take three deep breaths, and with your eyes closed, iden­tify all the sounds around you. Try to tune in to each

sound, as you did with your breath, and re­ally lis­ten closely. What do you hear?
