There aren’t many shoemakers who can credit themselves as the inventor of the stiletto heel, but Roger Vivier can. After all, this is the man who crafted the shoes for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953, and was the first to incorporate clear plastic into his avant-garde creations. Yet, amid the extravagance of his shoes, an icon stands against the test of time: the Belle Vivier. Famously worn by Catherine Deneuve in Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour, the Belle Vivier, along with its now-emblematic square metal buckle, quickly became synonymous with French allure and timeless elegance— elements creative director Bruno Frisoni has strived to reinvent. Today, the iconic Roger Vivier buckle gets another modern remix. Inspired by the eccentric decorative elements of Monsieur Vivier’s apartment, the maison’s Autumn/Winter ’17 collection is a melange of rich tapestry, artful prints, and abstract silhouettes. Case in point: the Pearl Strass Pump, where the buckle is adorned with pearlescent beads and complemented by a curved topline. The bag of the season, the Viv’ Cabas Stripes tote, is crafted from the softest leather and luscious suede, while a striking Viv’ Bow bag comes decorated with leatherbound chains. From Vivier’s eye for timeless silhouettes to Frisoni’s fresh takes on the eponymous label, one thing’s for sure— the past is well and truly presented in the now. Consider this season at Roger Vivier your ultimate artful update.
