AN U S T R I O LIFE L U I S
The Grand Palais in Paris celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of American photographer Irving Penn with an exhibition that looks back on his 70-year career. In this first retrospective since his death in 2009, his role as fashion photography’s authority in the 1950s is explored in greater detail. Besides the central piece of Penn’s very own canvas backdrop— matte grey scored with planes of cracks—a striking collection of 235 photographic prints and paintings, including iconic portraits of cultural luminaries Salvador Dalí and Marlene Dietrich, are also on display. Melding fashion photography and art, Penn uses the absence of objects to capture his subjects in their most honest state, producing clean figures with deep contrasts that are true testaments of film noir. Until January 29 at Grand Palais, Paris. www.grandpalais.fr/en
