The Return Of The Bob

On the streets of London, Paris, and Tokyo this season, the neck-baring, slightly-below-the-ear bob has been making heads turn. Case in point: Japanese DJ and social media influencer Mademoiselle Yulia, who sported this look throughout Paris Fashion Week and on her home ground. Structured and tapered, the cropped look remains timeless but this time, styled with a bold punch. Then again, there has always been a certain allure surrounding the bob; its androgynous allusion and connection to female empowerment being main factors. Consciously or subconsciously, this hairstyle has been a reflection of the state of mind as much as it is a fashion statement. Since the ’20s, particularly on silent-film-era star Louise Brooks, the bob has been a symbol of liberation, fearlessness, and social rebellion. In the ’60s when women fought for equality in the workplace, it made a comeback under Vidal Sassoon’s deft hands, and today, with people rallying for equality across the globe, this symbol of rebellious eras past is back in the limelight.
