Bold-Hearted Snake
Much like a snake that sheds its skin to appear anew, Bvlgari puts an unexpected twist to its iconic Serpenti, debuting a sparkling new design that is as edgy as it is elegant. By Abdul Aziz Draim.
Every so often, a snake would shed its skin to undergo transformation and emerge anew. Inspired by the reptile’s unique biology, Bvlgari’s very own Serpenti, long been one of the most recognisable motifs from the Maison, has now experienced its very own metamorphosis.
First introduced as the Secret Serpenti gemset watch in the late 1940s, this audacious snake would soon slither its way into Bvlgari’s jewellery collections through the decades, eventually establishing itself as the Roman jeweller’s iconic signature, a mesmerising emblem of power, seduction, temptation and, of course, transformation.
Throughout the 1960s and early ’70s, the Serpenti most famously took on the forms of bracelets with designs that veer towards the animalistic before morphing into a more stylised geometric form as the years rolled by.
Yet regardless of its varied evolution, the Serpenti beautifully expresses Bvlgari’s bold and fierce spirit, and has now grown even bolder. Thus, enter the new Serpenti Viper collection, presented this season, showcasing a look that appears more streamlined, courtesy of geometric shapes that are more pronounced that lend the serpent a more urban and edgy disposition. One can deduce that the Serpenti Viper is easily the most metropolitan the Serpenti has ever been.
A true mark of innovation and exemplary of Bvlgari’s unparalleled craftsmanship and jewellery knowhow, the Serpenti Viper holds a flexible modular construction where each of the snake’s scales is carefully hinged together and inserted meticulously one by one so that it comfortably caresses the wrist or finger it inhabits, forming a kind of precious armour that empowers the wearer.
Produced in a selection of three gold colours, the Serpenti Viper collection (page 29) comprises of an arresting assembly of bracelets, rings, necklaces and earrings. The bracelets and rings showcase greater refinement, with a double wrapping feature in pink and white gold. For that extra sliver of seduction, the stylised snakes also come dressed in bright plain gold scales embellished with diamonds on the heads and the tails.
