A labour of love, the snow setting technique requires great patience and true mastery in gemsetting. Regardless of the choice of stone—be them diamonds, rubies, emeralds, tsavorites, sapphires, opals, or hematite—each stone is selected to fit with the shape of the watch, varying in sizes in diameters between 0.5 to 1.6 millimetres. Each gem is then held only by the slenderest of prongs drawn out by expert craftsmen.
The difficulty lies in the exact placement of each of the stones. To beautifully and perfectly blanket the sensuous curves of the RM 07-01, when placed side by side the diamonds must snugly fit to a micron’s precision, to maintain the illusion of a random pattern. This is reliant on the experience of each individual gem setter, thus rendering every snow setting practice and its end result to be truly unique.
