Set in the his­toric E&O Ho­tel, 1885 is cer­tainly one restau­rant to ex­pe­ri­ence in Pe­nang. It’s fine ex­quis­ite dining with­out the su­per­cil­ious at­ti­tude you get in many places.

The cui­sine served here is best de­scribed as fu­sion. Hap­pily, the com­bi­na­tion of flavours and tex­tures does not jar the palate, but rather teases it de­light­fully.

• You can’t go wrong with any one of the three soups on the menu: creamy rich lob­ster bisque, del­i­cate duck con­sommé and light, earthy wild mush­room cap­puc­cino.

• Try the crispy nori tuna roll with a capsicum rel­ish and cit­rus dress­ing for a mem­o­rable con­trast of tex­tures.

• For mains, we rec­om­mend the grilled cod with buerre blanc, the crispy wrapped salmon and braised Wagyu beef cheeks, which are all finely tuned to please eye and palate.
