Set in the historic E&O Hotel, 1885 is certainly one restaurant to experience in Penang. It’s fine exquisite dining without the supercilious attitude you get in many places.

The cuisine served here is best described as fusion. Happily, the combination of flavours and textures does not jar the palate, but rather teases it delightfully.

• You can’t go wrong with any one of the three soups on the menu: creamy rich lobster bisque, delicate duck consommé and light, earthy wild mushroom cappuccino.

• Try the crispy nori tuna roll with a capsicum relish and citrus dressing for a memorable contrast of textures.

• For mains, we recommend the grilled cod with buerre blanc, the crispy wrapped salmon and braised Wagyu beef cheeks, which are all finely tuned to please eye and palate.
