Set in the historic E&O Hotel, 1885 is certainly one restaurant to experience in Penang. It’s fine exquisite dining without the supercilio­us attitude you get in many places.

The cuisine served here is best described as fusion. Happily, the combinatio­n of flavours and textures does not jar the palate, but rather teases it delightful­ly.

• You can’t go wrong with any one of the three soups on the menu: creamy rich lobster bisque, delicate duck consommé and light, earthy wild mushroom cappuccino.

• Try the crispy nori tuna roll with a capsicum relish and citrus dressing for a memorable contrast of textures.

• For mains, we recommend the grilled cod with buerre blanc, the crispy wrapped salmon and braised Wagyu beef cheeks, which are all finely tuned to please eye and palate.
