Born out of dreams of space travel and science fiction, the Astrograph Pen is as much an objet d’art as it is a writing instrument. The brainchild of a four-year collaboration between horological lab MB&F and Caran d’ache, a legendary producer of pens, pencils, pastels, and other artistic tools, this one-of-a-kind fountain pen comes with a $20,000 price tag. Part of the immensity of the pen’s price originates from the amount of labour and fine precision that goes into making it. Nearly 100 rhodium-plated components plus a rocket-like design with three stabiliser legs that extend out to hold the pen upright when not in use, requires over 500 manual operations. The pen is available in three different finishes and limited to just 99 units each.
