Malaysia Tatler Society

Editor’s Letter

- Elizabeth Soong managing editor

Everyone is fascinated by lists – to-do lists, best dressed, worst dressed, best places to visit, live and work, things to know about a person, the list goes on. You might not agree with everything that’s on the list, but they sure are entertaining – and informative. The Society magazine you hold in your hands is your definitive guide to knowing the people who are the movers and shakers of Malaysian society as we roll out the 300 List.

The list consists of who we think are the crème de la crème, based on who we’ve rubbed shoulders with during the year as well as people we’ve interviewed. In a way, lists define our cultural history, and preserve it. What author Umberto Eco said about lists makes sense: “The list is the origin of culture. It’s part of the history of art and literature. What does culture want? To make infinity comprehensible. It also wants to create order.”

In the list you will find some familiar faces as well as new ones. Deciding on who’s in and who’s out is not easy. Society is nebulous and everchanging as people come and go and their stocks rise and fall. Therefore, the Tatler editorial team has the arduous yet necessary task of curating the list. Thankfully we had a little help from a few trusted and discreet advisers.

Also in this magazine you will find a list of the best parties, events and weddings of 2014 as we recall those memorable moments. Furthermore, we cast an eye on the 30 Most Invited, 35 Style Icons, and Most Gracious Hosts. Widening our scope is our take on Asia’s Most Influential in the fields of Business & Industry, IT & Technology, Arts & Entertainment, Fashion, and Hospitality.

Finally, don’t forget to check out Asia’s Most Stylish women – a visual extravaganza of eight stunning beauties from the region chosen by each Asia Tatler title.

We hope you enjoyed going through the lists we prepared for your reading pleasure, and here’s wishing you all a fantastic 2015.
