As well as diving into and even dining in the deep blue sea, visitors to the Maldives can now sleep there, too. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, home of the undersea restaurant Ithaa, has created the world’s first undersea residence. Muraka, which means ‘coral’ in Dhivehi, the language of the tiny island nation, is a two-level palace, with one level above water and the other below. The undersea suite provides uninterrupted views of the marine environment from its living area, bathroom and bedroom. See colourful parrot fish, rays, sea turtles, and even dolphins up close, from the comfort of your king-size bed. A spiral staircase leads to the upper level, which features a twin bedroom, bathroom, powder room, gym, butler’s quarters, private security quarters and an integrated living room, kitchen, bar and dining area. A west-facing deck on the upper level is perfect for soaking up views of the sunset; switch to the opposite side to watch the sun come up over your infinity pool. Muraka can accommodate up to nine guests.
